Imagine one hundred and twenty coral islands rich with flora and fauna, surrounded
by pristine waters abundant with sea life! Situated on the mid west coast of Australia
lies the Abrolhos Islands! The extensive coral reef system stretches for a hundred
kilometres and is home to many species, some as yet to be named. This is one of the
richest marine areas in Australia and is a very important fish and bird breeding area!
The Abrolhos is an "A" class reserve so unless you are a fisheries officer or a
Cray fisherman you will not be allowed to land on the islands! Only eleven of the islands
are inhabited by fishermen and the rest of the islands are untouched!
Home to western rock lobster fisherman for four months of the year, from 15th March until 30th June. They have exclusive use of the islands and pull many tonnes of lobster from the ocean. The Abrolhos remains almost deserted for the other eight months of the year! Because of this isolation, the birds, animals and fishes have no fear of the fishermen and are very friendly and inquisitive.
Approximately 500 kilometres north of Perth lies the city of Geraldton. 32 nautical miles west of Geraldton sits the Abrolhos Islands!! Waiting for you ?
